Oakland Veterinary Referral Services is proud to work in a collaborative environment that allows us to offer top-tier specialty and emergency veterinary care. No hospital, including us, would function well without a team of outstanding veterinary technicians. Whether they work in general veterinary care or have specialized skills to help specialty veterinarians like at OVRS, we love vet techs and everything they do for animals.

Vet Tech Requirements

Veterinary technicians must have special certifications to work in the veterinary field. During their education, they’ll learn clinical skills they will use on the job. Their role covers a wide range of tasks that help the veterinarian provide the best care. From wellness visits to emergency surgeries, vet techs are essential to successful outcomes.

Diagnostic Testing

Diagnostic tests are vital for veterinary care, and vet techs are often the ones who perform them. From X-rays to ultrasounds, technicians usually drive the diagnostic process to ensure the veterinary team has a complete picture of what is happening inside an animal. Diagnostic testing is just as necessary when a pet has a broken bone as when they get a routine dental cleaning.

Medication

Vet techs are often the first and last face a client will see when visiting the veterinary hospital. They are often responsible for administering medications, treatments, and sometimes even pet vaccines during practically any kind of veterinary visit.

First Aid and Nursing Care

Since veterinary technicians are often the first to see an animal, they will usually administer first aid or other nursing care to animals in need. They will work to stabilize a pet until the veterinarian arrives.

Health Observations

Another crucial role of vet techs is to make health and behavior observations throughout the visit. We must have the most complete picture of a pet’s current condition to offer the best care. These observations can help us determine when something is wrong. They also allow us to create a health baseline to refer back to in the future.

Restraint During Exams

Vet techs are invaluable during the veterinary exam because they restrain the animal in a way that allows the veterinarian to do what they need to do. This keeps everyone, including the animal, safe during the visit and lets the doctor complete an exam or offer treatment.

Surgery Preparation

These fantastic vet techs are also responsible for preparing both animals and tools for surgery. They assist during the procedure and ensure the animal is safe and cared for after completion. They will also talk to pet owners about caring for pets at home to encourage the most effective post-surgical recovery.

We would be lost without our veterinary technicians and cannot say enough good things about them.
