Treating Pets in Pain
Did you know that at one point in time it was believed that pets didn’t feel pain. Can you even imagine? Today we know a lot better and make it a priority to provide the most effective pain control possible. We accomplish this by preemptively preventing pain, as well as utilizing multimodal techniques, which means we attack the pain from all angles.
Oakland Veterinary Referral Services has several means of preventing and reducing pain in your pets, and we often use them in combination with one another. Some of these include:
-
Drugs
We utilize many different types of drugs before, during, and after painful episodes. Two common types of medications used are non-steroidal anti-inflammatories (similar to ibuprofen for humans) and opioids (morphine and its relatives). We administer these drugs orally, by injection, by infusion, sometimes even in the form of a patch on the skin. Drugs are a powerful option that we have to provide relief for painful pets.
-
Supplements
Nutritional supplements and herbal therapies can have a place in helping to minimize pain as well.
-
Acupuncture
Acupuncture utilizes tiny needles to stimulate strategic points in the body to relieve pain, among other benefits. It is a useful tool in the pain relief process.
