It’s no secret that our pets have superior senses that allow them to hear, see, and even smell things that humans cannot. Throughout history, these extraordinary powers of observation have made animals the center of some fun and spooky myths involving the supernatural—including stories that star the pets as the ghostly figures. As we get ready to celebrate the spookiest day of the year, let’s check out some of the most fun pet ghost stories.

Preston the Trick or Treater

There’s a myth around the city of Nashville that the ghost of a boxer named Preston pops up every Halloween in the Belmont Hillsboro neighborhood. This friendly ghost allegedly went trick or treating with some human children a few decades ago and saved a young boy from getting hit by a car by taking the hit himself. Although his body was never found, plenty of people have claimed to see his friendly apparition as they go trick or treating around the neighborhood. In fact, some even say they feel something nudging them back toward the sidewalk if they get too close to the street.

Pet Ghost Stories: Hotel Cat

Jerome, Arizona, is a former mining town now made up of a combination of old buildings, new wineries, and whispers of the past that you can feel in every corner. At the Jerome Grand Hotel, many visitors have told the tale of a ghost cat they encountered during their stay. Sticking to the third floor of the old hotel, this ghost cat makes his (or her) presence known by running through the halls, scratching at furniture, and even sometimes curling up with a lucky guest.

Ghost…Chicken?

Pond Square in London has a ghost of a very unique animal that runs around in circles…literally. Many people have reported seeing the ghost of a chicken in the area that runs amok and disappears when anyone gets too close. Legend has it that Francis Bacon was trying to discover a new way to preserve meat and decided to try to stuff a chicken with snow before burying it. Unfortunately, Bacon himself died before he could make any real advancements with his theory, and the chicken is apparently showing his distaste for the experiment by haunting the area.

The Ghost Ape of Athelhampton

An ape might be an unusual pet, but it is an even more unusual ghost. Many people have claimed to see one hanging around the Athelhampton house in the West of England, where it lived as the family pet. The heartbroken daughter of the house locked herself in a small room one morning intending to end her own life. While there are conflicting stories about whether or not she succeeded, her beloved primate companion followed her in, and was unable to escape alive. Visitors to the house claim to hear the ape scratching at walls, and some have even seen him swinging from the ceiling.
