How to Tell if Your Pet is Having a Kidney Emergency
Whether your pet has been diagnosed with a chronic kidney condition or has a sudden onset of symptoms, a kidney emergency requires immediate care.
Unless your pet is suffering from a chronic condition you may not recognize your pet’s kidney emergency for what it is. If your pet is showing the following symptoms, please call us immediately for a consultation:
- Vomiting
- Diarrhea
- Decreased appetite
- Bad breath (also known as “Uremic Breath,” in which your pet’s breath will smell vaguely of urine)
- Decreased energy/lethargy
Because these are broad-spectrum symptoms, it is important that you call us for a case-by-case consultation if your pet is presenting these symptoms. Don’t let your pet suffer longer than necessary. If a kidney condition is at play, the sooner he or she begins treatment the better the prognosis for a positive outcome.
Causes of Kidney Crisis’
If your pet has not already been diagnosed with a chronic kidney disease, there may be a number of triggers for an acute kidney crisis, including:
- Infectious diseases
- Bacterial infections, such as Leptospirosis
- Ingestion of toxins, such as anti-freeze or grapes/raisins
