Did you know that Oakland Veterinary Referral Service offers specialized emergency care for pets with kidney emergencies? OVRS is one of Michigan’s only veterinary hospitals offering specialized kidney care and emergency dialysis for pets suffering from kidneys in crisis.

How to Tell if Your Pet is Having a Kidney Emergency

Whether your pet has been diagnosed with a chronic kidney condition or has a sudden onset of symptoms, a kidney emergency requires immediate care.

Unless your pet is suffering from a chronic condition you may not recognize your pet’s kidney emergency for what it is. If your pet is showing the following symptoms, please call us immediately for a consultation:

  • Vomiting
  • Diarrhea
  • Decreased appetite
  • Bad breath (also known as “Uremic Breath,” in which your pet’s breath will smell vaguely of urine)
  • Decreased energy/lethargy

Because these are broad-spectrum symptoms, it is important that you call us for a case-by-case consultation if your pet is presenting these symptoms. Don’t let your pet suffer longer than necessary. If a kidney condition is at play, the sooner he or she begins treatment the better the prognosis for a positive outcome.
